Alkaline Water IonizersHealth concerns of alklaine water ionizers confirmed?

A quick search of the internet for 'water ionizer' or 'alkaline water' reveals a number of agents promoting the alkaline water, produced by electrolysis, as a health 'cure-all'.  The primary claim is that drinking 'alkaline ionized water' will help flush out 'harmful acidic' wastes and thereby help cure and prevent disease. However, the spiel also claims that 'alkaline water' will help cure everything from cancer to gout.

Are any of these claims true?

Sadly, as we shall see, they are at best 'junk science' and at worst, especially where promoters are making money out of this medical/scientific myth, fraudulent. The scam is supported by a handful of self-proclaimed health 'experts' who should know better. Further investigation reveals that many so-called 'experts' recommending water ionizers have no formal scientific qualifications that would qualify them as 'experts' to comment on the complex field of human bio-chemistry.

In essence, the 'alkaline water' campaign is being conducted by way of misquotation, deception and deliberate omission of material facts.

"Rumors [sic] are circulating on the Internet and elsewhere that drinking alkaline water is beneficial to health and can miraculously cure everything from obesity and high blood pressure to breast cancer. ......it is absolutely untrue. .....Chalk this one up as a scam..."

Sounds harsh?   Judge for yourself.

Alkaline Water - Myths

This article will examine several of the popular claims about 'alkaline ionized water' and of water ionizers themselves.  These claims are primarily being made by water ionizer sales agents, not manufacturers.  We have made numerous requests to the manufacturers for supporting medical literature that would support the claims detailed herein.

So far we have been met with a wall of silence  Despite this effort we have yet to find one credible scientific report that would support the claim. Why?

Could it be because there is no medical evidence supporting the claims made about 'alkalising' water?

History

Electrical water ionization (a misnomer - actually 'water electrolysis) is not a recent invention. The principle behind water ionizers has been well understood since at least 1832 when British scientist, Michael Faraday, proposed the First law of Electrolysis.

In modern water ionizers an electrical current is run across a pair of oppositely-charged metallic electrodes (usually of platinum) placed in water. Positive ions that find themselves close to the negative electrode will acquire electrons, and negative ions near the positive electrode will lose electrons.  This reaction, producing a synthetic water with no natural equivalent, 'splits' water into two separate streams of high pH (>7.0) and low pH (<7.0) water. The low pH water is often sent down the drain while the high pH water is promoted as a miracle elixir.

Medical Certifications

Despite claims to the contrary, the Japanese Ministry of Health  has only ever issued Safety Approvals, originally in 1954, but has never certified or tested the health effects of 'alkaline water'.

"The Ministry of Health and Welfare was more concerned with safety issues when they examined the Ionizers for approval since they would be sold for general household use. Thus, it can be assumed that the Ministry of Health and Welfare does not recommend the use of these products."

However, despite almost 50-years of these devices being available there is still no medical clinical data on its long-term health effects. We have come a long way since 1954....

"..It has been 30 years since their [ionizer] approval, these benefits have never been reviewed using statistical data based on follow-up animal or dosage experiments with humans....."

Whilst they were popular in Japan during the late 1970 to 1980's with more than two dozen companies involved, all this changed in the early 1990's.  In 1992 a Japanese Government - Ministry of Merchandise Trade Report was released that was highly critical of both 'alkaline water' health claims and the sales tactics used to sell water ionizers.  Today, apart from later entrants from Korea, only one or two companies in Japan continue to persevere.

Claim #1 - Alkaline Balance

There most prominent claim is that 'alkaline ionized water' can help 'alkalise' the body and prevent all manner of disease. Consumers are confronted with vague health claims about water ionizers such as this gem;

".. it also alkalizes your drinking water -at the touch of a button. Not just alkalize slightly; which is next to useless in balancing your body; but alkalize to your choice!"

No medical evidence or even definition is offered of what is actually meant by this claim. Just a vague implication that 'alkalizing' your drinking water will help balance your body.  You decide its credibility.

Debunked

The idea of drinking alkaline water was never seriously contemplated until the late 1940's when Japanese scientists were in search of a solution to the severe drug shortages of the post-war period. The researchers initially found that electrically ionized alkaline water with a pH greater than 8.5 to 9.0 was a potential solution for suffers of Gastric Hyperacidity and other primarily digestive conditions. Water ionizers were never approved as 'alkalising' or 'balancing' devices.  Furthermore, even their ability to combat the conditions they were approved for has been in doubt for at least 10-years;

"Slightly alkaline ionized water cannot be expected to control the acidity of gastric fluid, milk and mineral water is more effective. It [the Japanese Ministry of Health] also insists that the efficacy [of Water Ionizers] has to be re-evaluated so as to not bring about unreasonable consumer expectations."

Renowned alternative and complementary health specialist Dr Andrew Weil, director of the Program in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona, makes this comment about alkaline water in response to a query from a consumer;

Does Alkaline Water Promote Health?

Manufacturers of water ionizers state that their products produce more alkaline water, which allows your body to better absorb minerals and antioxidants from water. Are these health claims real? Do you recommend ionizers?   -- Michael Makoul

"Home water ionizers, which I’ve seen offered for sale on the Internet, are just the latest twist in the ongoing effort to promote the notion that alkaline water is somehow protective of your health. The underlying idea is that you can prevent disease by balancing your body’s pH. …None of these claims are true. Furthermore, your body needs absolutely no help in adjusting its pH. Normally, the pH of blood and most body fluids is near 7, which is close to neutral. This is under very tight biological control because all of the chemical reactions that maintain life depend on it. … The health claims for [electrical] water ionizers and for alkaline water are bogus. Save your money."

When one of the United States most respected health specialists says the health claims for 'alkaline water ionizers' are 'bogus' it is time to take notice. But he didn't stop there;

Alkaline Water for Chronic Fatigue?

Question: I have a friend who was told at the local health food store that she needed to drink alkaline water for her chronic fatigue/Epstein Barr virus. What do you know about this? Is it of any benefit?

"Rumors [sic] are circulating on the Internet and elsewhere that drinking alkaline water is beneficial to health and can miraculously cure everything from obesity and high blood pressure to breast cancer. Alkaline water purportedly "neutralizes" the "acidic wastes" in the body. These "wastes" are said to include malignant cells and acid "accumulations." This theory seems very well developed and may sound plausible to some, but it is absolutely untrue. I get a lot of questions about alkalinity and acidity and whether eating alkaline foods (or acidic ones) influences the body's pH in a healthful direction. There is no scientific research supporting this line of thinking.... It sounds to me as if your friend was sold a bill of goods by an uninformed health food store clerk. Chalk this one up as a scam, and tell your friend to save her money."

Alkaline Water - 'Scientists DO NOT AGREE'

One Australian based company has been citing a number of scientific studies conducted on the health benefits of naturally occurring  'alkaline' spring or bore water in a clear attempt to link their 'alkaline ionized water' with the natural mineral water these studies are based on.

Examples such as the Finland Study of Water Hardness and Heart Disease is a blatant attempt to associate valid scientific studies with the pseudo-science of ionized alkaline water.

"The beneficial effects [of alkaline ionizers]claimed by the indications covered a wide range of subject matters. However, some of these statements could very likely violate current pharmaceutical laws."

Japanese Ministry of Merchandise Trade
Report on Consumer Complaints - 1992

"The test revealed that even alkaline water with a pH over 10.0 has very little acid [gastric] neutralizing property... in some tested cases, the acid water had a similar acid control property to that of alkaline water."

Wellness - water ionization the way Nature intended

"The Wellness Filter is a natural water ionizer. However, rather than using electricity and metal electrodes Wellness uses natural far infrared and magnetic energies.  Prior to our involvement with Wellness the directors rejected the idea of electrical water ionization and the notion of drinking alkaline ionized water back in 1993. The reasons were purely scientific and health related - over dozens of subjects we saw signs that indicated drinking 'alkaline water' was not the right way to go.  After all, who ever saw a natural spring plugged into mains electricity?"

Alkaline + Acid = Poor Digestion
"What happens to a normal healthy gut environment when it is bombarded for several months or years with high pH alkaline water that is found nowhere in Nature?"

We have also seen electrically ionized alkaline water cause some severe energetic imbalances when tested. Based on these results there is significant doubt about the benefit of some of the electrically ionised waters we have tested.
