Non-Municipal Water

The Wellness range of water filters are designed only for use with municipal (potable) and/or micro-biologically safe water. However, for many rural households the only water available is from rainwater tank or other non-municipal sources.

As a result there certain minimum pre-treatment requirements that must be met before a Wellness Filter can be used with non-municipal water. Issues to consider when looking to treat non-municipal water sources include:

  • Dirt, Sediment and Detritus
Organic matter not only prematurely blocks carbon cartridges it also prevents effective sterilisation by shielding bacteria from Ultra-Violet light.

  • Micro-biological
E.Coli and other pathogens are spread through animal and bird droppings. In municipal water chlorine kills bacteria and suppresses its growth, but an absence of chlorine in non-municipal water means carbon cartridges quickly become the ideal breeding ground for bacterial colonies.

At a minimum all micro-biologically untreated water sources require pre-filtration and sterilisation.

Big Blue Whole of Home Pre-FilterPre-Filtration

Pre-filters bring water quality up to a standard where bacterial sterilisation can occur. However, bacteria will be shielded from Ultra-violet light behind dirt particles so water must be filtered to at least 10-microns before UV light will work effectively.  For more on Pre-Filtration click here.

Ultra-Violet Sterilisation

In UV systems water is passed through a stainless steel reactor where a Germicidal Lamp emits light at a frequency designed to render water micro-biologically safe.

4 Lpm Ultraviolet SterilisationWellness recommends the Sterilight* range of Ultra-Violet Disinfection systems as an economical way of achieving >99.99% reduction in bacteria and viruses.  Innovative Sterilight UV features include;

  • Easy servicing - no need to disconnect water flow to change UV lamp
  • 99.99% effective against bacteria, virus, and cysts (Giardia & Cryptosporidium)
  • CE certified "ICE" ballasts featuring audible alarm & power-on indicator
  • Quartz sleeve allows for maximum UV output and operating efficiency
  • Compact 304 Electro-polished stainless steel reactor with seven year warranty

*Requires power (AC or DC)

Non-Municipal Solutions

Wellness has selected a range of non-municipal solutions will satisfy the most demanding of filtration and microbiological sterilisation needs.  Barring any special water requirements, such as heavy mineralisation, iron or salts, the following systems should provide you with water of potable quality ready for Wellness enhancement.

When choosing a system there are two primary considerations to note.

  • POU - Point of Use
Point of Use refers to filtration and treatment at the point where you will be drinking water from the faucet.  In this case, only water for drinking purposes is treated.

  • POE - Point of Entry
Point of Entry refers to filtration and treatment at the point where water enters the dwelling. In this case all water for drinking, bathing and other purposes is treated.

Under either POU or POE users can choose to filter/sterilise all water entering the house (POE) but use a Wellness Filter to enhance drinking water only (POU).

Bore Water

For deep bore water, where microbiological contamination is less of a concern, other problems can arise.

  • High Levels of Salt or Minerals
Bore water can suffer from very high levels of; salt, calcium and iron. Salt requires specialist Reverse Osmosis systems while Iron and Calcium often require a water softener or other type of specialty filter.

Wellness recommends consultation with your local water dealer for a full mineral analysis to determine pre-treatment requirements for all bore water sources.
